Barclays Premier League

Manchester United will be without injured trio Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Rafael, with Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez also sidelined.

Jonny Evans is set to partner Phil Jones at centre-back, while Patrice Evra returns after a knee injury.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says Luka Modric, who has been repeatedly linked with Chelsea, will not play on Monday.

Spurs will monitor Peter Crouch's ankle injury, while Ledley King, William Gallas and Alan Hutton are ruled out.

The record books rarely provide encouragement for visiting teams at Old Trafford, and Tottenham fans heading to Manchester may do so more in hope than expectation. It is a decade since Spurs beat the Red Devils, with Willem Korsten among the scorers in a 3-1 win at White Hart lane.

Harry Redknapp's side will also be aware of United's formidable home record last season, when they won 18 of 19 league games on their own patch. However, now could be a good time to face the reigning champions, who may have to field an inexperienced defensive line-up on Monday.

The Red Devils rearguard could be in for a real test against a Tottenham side who ruthlessly put Europa League opponents Hearts to the sword on Thursday, scoring five unanswered goals.

Tottenham's hopes of performing a Champions League miracle came to an inevitable conclusion as Real Madrid rounded off an emphatic quarter-final triumph with victory at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp made predictably defiant noises about the possibility of overturning Real's 4-0 lead from the first meeting at the Bernabeu - but in reality this was never a serious option against Jose Mourinho's side.

And so it proved as Real were helped on their way towards an 'El Clasico' confrontation with La Liga rivals Barcelona in the last four by a nightmare moment from Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Spurs had failed to make any inroads into Real's lead when Gomes fumbled a routine effort from Cristiano Ronaldo into the net five minutes after the break to complete the formalities and take Mourinho a step closer to a Champions League final with a third club.

Redknapp's players did everything in their power to clear the huge obstacle in front of them and were unfortunate not to be awarded an early penalty when Luka Modric looked to be brought down by Xabi Alonso.

It was a rare moment of discomfort for Real as Spurs' Champions League campaign fizzled out in low-key fashion in front of their own supporters, who showed their appreciation for the efforts of their players in Europe with warm applause, even in disappointment, at the final whistle.

Spurs must now turn their attentions towards overhauling Manchester City in the race for a top-four place to ensure they return to this stage next season - but they can take great credit from the manner in which they have acquitted themselves in Europe's elite competition.

Bale tried but failed to inspire an unlikely Spurs comeback

The night Inter Milan were soundly beaten at White Hart Lane and the victory against AC Milan in the San Siro will live long in the memory. They were undone, however, by Real's superior quality as well as the self-destruct button Peter Crouch pressed so spectacularly with his early red card in Madrid.

Spurs knew only an early goal would provide them with the faintest hope of somehow turning around Real's advantage from the first leg, but Mourinho's men were resolute and their only moments of serious anxiety came from three penalty claims.

Gareth Bale went down far too easily with Alonso in close attendance and Italian referee Nicola Rizzi was right to ignore the appeals.

A second incident involving the former Liverpool midfield man, this time as he challenged Modric, was a much closer call and Real were fortunate to get the benefit of the official's doubt.

The frustration continued as Roman Pavlyuchenko was involved in another collision in the box with Real defender Raul Albiol but once again there was no response from Rizzi.

Pavlyuchenko had Spurs' best opportunity of the first half when Aaron Lennon found himself unmarked 12 yards out, only for the Russian to sky his attempt well over the top. He also tested Iker Casillas with a long-range effort that was held comfortably by the Real keeper.

The Spanish side's responses were fleeting but their main business was closing out the tie with no alarms.

They did suffer one setback, however, when Ricardo Carvalho was booked for a foul on Tom Huddlestone that means the influential former Chelsea defender misses the first leg of the semi-final against Barcelona.

Spurs were threatened when Sergio Ramos met Mesut Ozil's corner, only to see his header turned away by Gomes.

The brutal truth was that the game was up after those 90 harrowing minutes in Madrid but any lingering hope Spurs had of provoking an unlikely collapse from Real was snuffed out in one dreadful moment for Gomes.

Ronaldo's effort from 25 yards travelled more in hope than expectation but the Brazilian fumbled hopelessly and even botched his attempt to recover the situation as the ball crept over the line.

It was then all about limiting the damage and clawing back a measure of respectability for Spurs and Pavlyuchenko had a chance to at least draw them level on the night but he headed Lennon's cross over the top when unmarked.

Lennon was then withdrawn by Spurs and replaced by Jermain Defoe, who wasted no time in testing Casillas with a low 20-yard effort that he turned away.

Spurs, to their credit, continued to battle and almost scored when Casillas misjudged Rafael van der Vaart's corner and Defoe almost smuggled home the loose ball.

Tottenham left themselves with an insurmountable task after the first leg and now must focus their attention fully on the Premier League.

Crouch has now scored 11 goals this season

Peter Crouch went from midweek villain to weekend hero with two goals as Tottenham beat a spirited Stoke to boost their pursuit of the top four.

Crouch was sent off in Tuesday's 4-0 loss at Real Madrid, but he headed Spurs into a 10th minute lead here.

Luka Modric's angled drive doubled the lead, but Matthew Etherington's superb solo goal narrowed the deficit.

Crouch headed his second before Kenwyne Jones' strike kept Stoke in the game, but further goals eluded both sides.

The victory is the perfect riposte for Spurs following their quarter-final first-leg loss to Real Madrid, which has - barring the most unlikely of second-leg turnarounds - ended their involvement in this season's Champions League.

This first Premier League win in five games for the north London club narrows the gap between them and fourth-placed Manchester City to three points and improved their chances of a second successive campaign in Europe's premier club competition.

Redknapp delighted with Spurs display

The victory was fitting reward for a largely dominant home performance, but this was not without its flaws, which twice allowed the visitors to gain a foot-hold back into the game.

With 20 minutes gone it all seemed to be going according to plan as Harry Redknapp's side were rewarded for their fluency with a two-goal lead.

Crouch, who Redknapp publicly backed after his sending off in the Bernabeu, was perfectly placed to head in strike-partner Roman Pavlyuchenko's cross following a short corner.

Shortly after, the home side doubled their lead and again Russian Pavlyuchenko was involved, holding up the ball before laying off to the onrushing Modric, who skipped past Huth and fired in low between Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic's legs.

However, Spurs comfort would not last long as Stoke hit back in style.

Former Tottenham left-winger Etherington collected on the halfway line, clipped the ball past Michael Dawson and drove on towards the box. After holding off the attention of Tom Huddlestone, he slotted home superbly past Heurelho Gomes from an angle.

It was a goal Spurs' Players' Player of the Year nominee Gareth Bale would have been proud of.

Credit to the home side, who did not alter their attacking approach and they were rewarded for this just after the half hour when Crouch climbed at the back post to head home Huddlestone's cross.

Pulis praises Etherington

The first half still had one further moment of magic though and it was the visitors who provided it, with a little help from the home side.

Bale dwelt on the ball, allowing Wilkinson to prod through to Jones. The striker turned and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from 25 yards.

The away side should have been level early in the second half, but somehow Jon Walters conspired to hit a post from two yards with the goal at his mercy.

Granted the cross from Jones was delivered with pace and Gomes got the slightest of touches, but the striker should still have scored.

Jones continued to be a threat for Stoke, heading one effort wide of goal and forcing Gomes to tip over with a 25-yard drive.

The home side created chances of their own though to kill the game and thought they had done so when Begovic dropped the ball under pressure from Younes Kaboul and Pavlyuchenko hooked in.

However, referee Kevin Friend ruled that the Stoke keeper had been fouled.

Despite late Stoke pressure, Tottenham held on for what was a vital victory.
