Dutch club 'signs up' hat-trick toddler

28 April 2011 Last updated at 15:46 Video of the toddler's feat was posted on YouTube by his father Jorg

A Dutch football club has awarded a toddler a symbolic 10-year contract after watching video of him scoring a hat trick into his toy box.

When Baerke van der Meij, one and a half, drove three balls into the box one after another, his father Jorg posted the video on YouTube.

VVV, the club in the south-eastern town of Venlo where the family live, invited Baerke for a "trial".

They were doubly impressed by the fact his grandfather had played for VVV.

"Baerke did his best to amaze professional footballer Ken Leemans with his football techniques," the club said.

"One can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kick technique, perseverance and, importantly, football genes of grandfather Jan van der Meij."

Importantly, too, the little Dutchman can shout "bal" (English: ball).

The signing of the contract, with a little help from Jorg, was toasted with a glass of orange juice.

The video originally posted on YouTube has been viewed at least 1.67m times.

Six killed in Dutch mall rampage

9 April 2011 Last updated at 21:02 GMT Jeroen Wollaars, a reporter from NOS, says the gun club member left two notes, including a suicide note, before he carried out his attack

A gunman in the Netherlands has killed six people and wounded at least 11 before taking his own life.

The killings took place at a busy shopping centre in the town of Alphen aan den Rijn, about 25km (15 miles) south-west of Amsterdam.

The mayor of the town said the man opened fire with an automatic weapon and then shot himself.

The gunman came from the town, was known to police and "almost certainly operated alone", said a prosecutor.

'Slaughter'

Kitty Nooy, from The Hague prosecutor's office, identified the man as 24-year-old Tristan van der Vlis, a member of a shooting club who had a permit to carry five weapons.

She said he was native Dutchman from Alphen who had had previous run-ins with the law, including an illegal weapons possession charge that was dropped.

People went over to them to help, thinking that they had fainted. When they understood that someone was firing shots, everyone started running”

End Quote Mehdi Attha Witness Mayor Bas Eenhoorn called the incident "unprecedented" for the town of about 70,000 people.

He said four of the injured were in a critical condition and five had serious wounds.

Children were among the casualties, but officials say they are not prepared to say whether they were among the dead or the injured due to privacy reasons.

"It's hardly credible that our town could experience such slaughter, and on a day as beautiful as this," he said.

Most witnesses said the shooting lasted between 10 and 20 minutes, according to AFP news agency.

A shopkeeper in the Ridderhof centre said the gunman appeared to be shooting people at random.

"Initially, we thought it was fireworks," 37-year-old Mehdi Attha told AFP.

"Then the noises got closer and two people fell to the ground very close to me.

"People went over to them to help, thinking that they had fainted. When they understood that someone was firing shots, everyone started running," she added.

"I didn't see the shooter, I was just thinking about running."

Evacuations

Another survivor, an elderly woman, described the killer as "big and dressed in camouflage pants".

Injured people are carried out of a shopping mall after a shooting in Alphen aan den Rijn, 15 miles (25km) southwest of Amsterdam, Netherlands, 9 April 2011 The incident happened at a busy shopping centre

"He moved about without haste, killing in cold blood," she told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

Ms Nooy said notes had been found in both Van der Vlis' house and car, but did not reveal their contents.

After the shooting, Mayor Eenhoorn ordered the evacuations of three other shopping centre in the town.

He did not give a reason for the decision, but Radio Netherlands reported that the note in the attacker's car had said he had planted explosives at the other malls.

Queen Beatrix and Prime Minister Mark Rutte issued statements expressing their shock and saying they sympathised with victims and families.

A resident told the BBC the shooting was unusual, despite being the second in the area this month.

"It's weird that something like this has happened in this neighbourhood. Usually nothing ever happens here. But this is the second shooting in two weeks," said Thomas Aantjes.

Two people were killed on 2 April in a shooting in the same district of the town. Officials have not made a link between the two incidents.

Dutch cardinal 'protected abuser'

11 February 2011 Last updated at 11:19 GMT Cardinal Adrianus Simonis (file image from 25/1/2011) Cardinal Simonis said he thought the priest had changed A senior figure in the Dutch Catholic Church protected a priest who sexually abused children, Dutch media reports say.

Cardinal Ad Simonis is accused of knowing of the allegations made against the priest when he transferred him to another parish, where he abused again.

According to AFP, Mr Simonis said that at the time he believed that the priest - who has not been named - had changed.

He said the priest's renewed abuse in Amersfoort was "lamentable".

The priest was moved from his parish in Zoetermeer to a parish in Amersfoort after the local bishop complained about his abuse, Radio Netherlands says.

Ad Simonis - who served as archbishop from 1983 to 2007 - Radio Netherlands reports, did not tell the new parish of Amersfoort about the allegations against the priest, or monitor his behaviour.

Dutch officials say six of the priest's victims reported incidents to the police from 1987 to 2008, the radio station reports.

Erwin Meester, who says he was abused by the priest, is quoted as telling Radio Free Netherlands that Cardinal Simonis "wilfully and knowingly gave a paedophile his protection, when he should have been protecting the faithful under his care".

Outrage

According to AFP the cardinal admitted in a statement that he was "aware" of the priest's history. He said the priest had undergone therapy and received "serious, written psychological advice" which he believed was "adequate" ahead of the appointment.

He also added that there had never been any signal from the parish that the priest "had fallen back into child abuse", saying the allegations first came to light on Wednesday.

The cardinal, now retired, caused outrage last year when, commenting on abuse within the Catholic Church in the Netherlands said that they had known nothing of it.

He repeated a phrase in German, rather than Dutch, which is associated with Nazi excuses after World War II.

In March 2010, Dutch bishops ordered an independent inquiry into more than 200 allegations of sexual abuse of children by priests, in addition to three cases dating from 1950 to 1970.

Allegations first centred on Don Rua monastery school in the eastern Netherlands, with people saying they were abused by Catholic priests in the 1960s and 70s.

This prompted dozens more alleged victims from other institutions to come forward.
